This prequel takes place the night before Daughter of Damnation begins. It is quieter than the novels, and much shorter. It contains: foreboding and impending loss; a parent keeping a secret from her child; early, involuntary signs of magic surfacing in the body; the sense of being watched; and passing references to alcohol. Nobody is harmed in it.
